Diaper Rash or Diaper Dermatitis is a red rash that appears on the buttocks and groin area of the baby. The rash is inflamed and may have seeping eruptions if severe. It is found in children under age 2 years, and most ordinarily in the middle of ages 9-12 months. It causes a lot of hurt to the baby, especially when the diapers are soiled or wet, and also when the area is cleaned during a diaper change.

The main factor causing the rash is wetness due to urine and feces, but it can also be caused by detergents and chemicals in the diapers, other infections such as monilia (thrush), immoderate washing of the skin with soap, and the use of plastic pants that exaserbate the wetness.
It is very important to convert the diaper as soon as it becomes soiled or wet, and to wash the area wholly and to dry it very well with each diaper change. Gently pat the area dry, or use a hair dryer to preclude further irritation to the area. In fact, it is a good idea to leave the diaper off wholly and let your baby air dry for a short time spans each day, more often if the rash is severe.
Avoid powders that can cake to the skin, and mineral oil, which can clog the pores. Do not use plastic pants or disposable diapers, which discourage air circulation.
If you use cloth diapers, you can add vinegar to the rinse water, or use a borax soap to neutralize the ammonia that is produced by the urine. Be sure to clean the diapering area frequently. A mild vinegar explication is good for this: 1 part vinegar to four parts water.
You can make your own natural baby powder. A recipe I have found helpful is to put ½ cup of cornstarch in a baggy, and then add nearby 20 drops of therapeutic grade lavender principal oil (Lavendula agustafolia) evenly throughout the cornstarch (to preclude clumping). Then close the baggy and use your fingers to disperse the oil throughout the cornstarch. You can then use a salt shaker with large holes to dispense the powder. This is a wonderful, therapeutic powder to apply during diaper changes. Another recipe would be to add 20 drops of Roman Chamomile (Charmaemelum nobile) to the cornstarch, or you could add 10 drops of lavender and 10 drops of Roman Chamomile.
Another aromatherapy recipe for treatment would be to make a therapeutic lotion by adding 5 drops of lavender and 2 drops of Roman Chamomile to ½ ounce of calendula-infused oil (preferably) or jojoba carrier oil. Blend this thoroughly, and then apply a few drops during diaper changes after the baby has been cleaned, and dried, and before applying the clean diaper.
